Fiji has a long history dating back over eight thousand years ago when the first settlers, the Melanesians, arrived. The first European explorers landed on the island around 1643 and were not treated well. The Fijian people killed and ate the Europeans who came ashore.
The island later became a British colony, and was used mainly as a sugar plantation. Indian labourers were brought from India to work on the plantations, and now make up nearly 44% of the population on this island.
In 1970 Fiji became independent by breaking ties with the British. After independence there was much tension between the ethnic groups on the island. In 1987 elections a coalition government was elected that was dominated by ethnic Indians. A coup followed led by an ethnic Melanesian Col. Sitveni Rabuka. There was then a new constitution that gave preferential treatment to ethnic Fijians which were later changed thanks to pressure from the international community.
